Harvard forward Andre Akpan has been named the New England Soccer News Men’s College Player of the Year. He also is among the finalists for the Soccer News Network National player of the Year, which will be announced next week.
Akpan, a native of Grand Prairie, Texas, earned his third selection to the NSCAA Men’s NCAA Division I All-America Team with the announcement of the 2009 squad. He is one of only four among the 36 players to earn repeat honors. Akpan is one of the finalists for the Missouri Athletic Club Herman Trophy, which will be announced on Friday in St. Louis.
Akpan led the Ivy League with 11 goals and six assists, and was named Ivy League Player of the Year. He has been a consistent leader for the Crimson throughout his career and is projected to be a strong MLS draft prospect.
UMass goalkeeper Zack Simmons won the two previous New England Soccer News Men’s College Player of the Year awards.
