BC women pound Panthers
NEWTON, Mass. -- McKenzie Meehan set a Boston College scoring record as the Eagles’ women’s team took a 3-0 win over Pittsburgh in an Atlantic Coast Conference match at the Newton Campus Field Thursday night.
Meehan scored her 55th career goal and upped her career point total to 118, breaking the school record set by Boston Breakers forward Kristie Mewis.
Hayley Dowd’s fifth-minute score, her 38th career goal, gave BC (9-1-1 overall, 1-1-0 ACC) the lead. Jenna Bike upped the lead in the 53rd minute and Meehan added her ninth goal of the season in the 84th minute, finishing a diving header off a low cross from Gaby Carreiro.
BC outshot Pitt (1-8-1, 0-2-0), 19-7.
"McKenzie's diving header goal to break the scoring record was nothing short of spectacular, which summarizes her career,'' BC coach Alison Foley said. “I think it's really important (to score early). You want a goal in the first 10 minutes and sometimes lull the team if you get it early. I think we kind of got into second gear there but I thought in the second half we picked it back up.
"We are in a really, really good place. We are playing a lot of players and the depth is really good. At times our speed of play might need to be a little faster throughout the midfield. I think we are really talented in wide positions and can get around just about anyone in the country but we want to make sure we get the ball into those wide channels to play to our strengths.''
