Crusaders get past Gaels, 3-1
WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Holy Cross Crusader women took a 3-1 win over Iona in coach Casey Brown’s debut in both teams’ season-opener at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium Friday night.
The Crusaders took the lead as junior Caitlin Harty finished a cross from sophomore Lily Puccia for her fourth career goal in the 50th minute. Junior defender Allie Neumann scored from close range in the 52nd minute. Iona retaliated on a 70th-minute Christine Rebus goal. Holy Cross, which outshot the Gaels, 8-3, and had five shots on goal in the second half, added an 80th-minute Andj Seslija goal off a cross from junior Kara Shaw.
Freshman Caroline Cashion made one save for Holy Cross and Tiffany Martinez had four saves for Iona. Harty and Neumann had two shots on goal.
