Crusader men continue fast start with win over Lehigh

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Junior captain Yuji Callahan, senior Matt Villano and senior Joey DeVivo scored as the Holy Cross men’s team defeated Lehigh, 3-1, in the Patriot League season-opener for both teams at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium Saturday night.

The Crusaders (5-3-0 overall, 1-0-0 conference) improved 5-0-0 at home, their best start since 2001, when they won their first five home matches.

Callahan scored his first goal of the season in the second minute, the Mountain Hawks (2-5-1, 0-1-0) tying the score on Jack Miskel’s 35-yarder in the 30th minute.

DeVivo volleyed in his fifth goal of the season for a 2-1 lead in the 53rd minute and Rupp scored in the 73rd minute.

“It is great to start the Patriot League season with a victory,” Holy Cross coach Marco Koolman said. “We made some adjustments after being tied at 1-1 going to halftime and the team responded to those changes. We told the team that they have to raise their play to another level and everyone did. We defended really well and took advantage of our opportunities with some outstanding goals.”
