Crusader men bested by Bucknell Bison

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Holy Cross men’s team fell out of the Patriot League lead, absorbing a 2-1 loss to Bucknell at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium Saturday.

The Bison (3-6-2 overall, 1-0-1 PL) took a first-minute lead as Sebastiaan Blickman finished a shot off the right post by freshman Nick King off a corner kick. Joey DeVivo tied the match with a 39th-minute free kick, his 22nd career goal. DeVivo threatened to break the deadlock with a 75th-minute drive that was saved by freshman Emmett Witmer. A minute later, Crispin redirected a Blickman shot to give Bucknell the lead.

“We needed to play better defensively today,” Holy Cross (5-5-0, 1-1-0) coach Marco Koolman said. “It is tough when you give up an early goal like we did but I like how we battled back to tie the game. In the second half, we had a lot of chances but their goalkeeper came up with some good saves and our final touch of the ball has to get better. Even though their game-winning goal was off of a deflection, we have to hold ourselves accountable for giving away those chances and work on defending details. Our effort was strong today and we look forward to continuing Patriot League play.”
