Huskies tripped by Tigers in NCAA first round

CLEMSON, S.C. -- Northeastern had its four-game winning streak snapped as the Huskies fell, 1-0, to No. 3-seeded Clemson in the first round of the NCAA Womenís Championship at Historic Riggs Field Sunday.

The Huskies (14-7-1) threatened as sophomore Valentina Soares Gache had a shot saved by Kailen Sheridan in the first half and sophomore Nicole Gorman blasted an attempt into Sheridan in the second half.

Shannon Horganís 61st-minute blast over sophomore Nathalie Nidetch went in just under the bar, qualifying the Tigers (14-4-3) for a second-round meeting with Arkansas. Nidetch (three saves) then made a diving stop a Jenna Polonski drive, and the Huskies' back line of seniors Mackenzie Dowd, Krista Meaglia and Jenny Sinclair and sophomore Eve Goulet helped limit the high-powered Clemson attack to four shots on goal.

NU finished with its second-highest win total behind the 2014 teamís 15.
