Friar women hold Scarlet Knights to draw
PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The Providence College women’s team rallied for a 1-1 tie with No. 10 Rutgers in a match moved to a Sunday afternoon kickoff because of weather.
The Scarlet Knights took the lead in the 33rd minute as freshman Brittany LaPlant notched her first career goal off an assist from senior Jennifer Andresen.
In the 81st minute, Providence sophomore Katie Day netted her first goal of the season, a penalty kick past Alana Jimenez.
The Scarlet Knights held the advantage in shots, 24-4. Senior Kristyn Shea recorded nine saves and Jimenez recorded one save.
“It was a difficult match today because of the quick turnaround, travel and against a well-coached team,” Providence coach Sam Lopes said. “It’s always great to get a tough result on the road, but I’m more proud of the response from Friday and after our half time chat. We’re a growing team but if we build off this competitive mentality, we’ll put ourselves in a position to develop and improve daily.”
