Friar men fire past SMU Mustangs

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Danny Griffin scored the deciding goal for the second successive game as the Providence menís team took a 1-0 win over SMU in the opener of the RI Capital City Classic Friday night.

Griffin finished to the far post off a run down the right off a Brendan Constantine feed in the 77th minute.

The Friars (3-2-0) threatened as Alex DaCosta had 37th- and 40th-minute close-range shots saved by Michael Nelson, Markus Jacobsen sending a rebound high off the first attempt. Redshirt sophomore Colin Miller earned his second shutout in his second start for the Friars, stopping a shot by Stanton Garcia, who came in alone on goal. The Friars outshot the Mustangs (2-3-0), 17-5.
