Friar women halt Hoyas, again

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Providence Friars women’s team held No. 6-ranked Georgetown to a 0-0 draw in both teams’ Big East Conference opener at Shaw Field Sunday.

The Friars (6-3-2 overall, 0-0-1 conference) improved their unbeaten streak to three games in a rematch of their conference tournament semifinal penalty kicks win last year.

“It was an intense game, where both teams had chances to win but didn’t capitalize, so a draw was fair,” Providence coach Sam Lopes said. “From our end, we needed better decisions or be more clinical in front of the goal. However, outstanding effort and attitude today from the team against a very good Georgetown (8-1-1, 0-0-1) side, who is so difficult to beat at their place. We competed so well and gave everything we had so proud of them. We need to quickly learn from this game, isolate areas where we can improve and prepare for another difficult game on Thursday against Xavier.”
