IT WAS THEIR DAY
Friar women outduel Musketeers in extra time
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Katie Day’s 97th-minute goal gave the Providence women's team a 2-1 extra time win over Xavier in a Big East Conference match Thursday.
The Friars (7-3-2 overall, 1-0-1 conference) took the lead as Kathryn Hiller scored her sixth goal of the season, converting the rebound of a Juliana Pellegrini shot off the crossbar in the 13th minute.
Xavier (6-5-1, 0-2-0) tied the score in the 60th minute as Samantha Dewey converted off a Kenadie Carlson cross for her sixth goal of the season.
Day scored her second goal of the season off a Kayla Steeves corner kick as the Friars improved their unbeaten streak to four games.
"Credit to Xavier, they made it difficult tonight and competed well even after going down a goal,” Providence coach Sam Lopes said. “I am proud of the team to keep pushing with purpose to get the winner. We could have made it easier on ourselves but it would have been unfortunate had we not won based on our performance. There are no easy Big East games and we have another difficult one on the road (at Butler) on Sunday."
