PC men bounced by Bluejays in Big East tourney
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The top-seeded Providence Friars menís team had its eight-game winning streak snapped with a 2-1 loss to Creighton in the semifinals of the Big East Conference tournament before a 2,568 crowd at Anderson Stadium Thursday night.
The No. 22-ranked Friars (12-6) took the lead in the seventh minute as Danny Griffin finished from just inside the top of the penalty area off a feed from the end line from Steve Kilday, his seventh goal of the season.
The Bluejays (11-5-3), who will meet Butler in the finals Sunday, equalized on Ricky Lopez-Espinís leaping volley of a Joel Rydstrand free kick in the 31st minute. Myles Englis broke the deadlock, heading in a cross from Karim Sawaf in the 41st minute.
Creightonís Alex Kapp (nine saves), a Boston College transfer, went low to deflect a close-range Julian Gressel shot in the 60th minute, then stopped Gressel and Braden Kline attempts. Colin Miller (two saves) lost for the first time in 12 starts.
