Providence sets up visit to No. 1 Maryland

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence Friars capitalized on an early Delaware mixup in taking a 2-0 win over the Blue Hens in the first round of the NCAA Menís Championship at Anderson Stadium Thursday night.

The Friars (13-6-0) will take a four-match road winning streak into a second round visit to No. 1-seeded Maryland at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Providence took an eighth-minute lead as senior Julian Gressel launched a long ball into the penalty area, Delaware (12-8-1) goalkeeper Todd Mortonís attempted clearance deflecting off defender John Schroeder toward the goal. Redshirt junior Brendan Reardon finished into an open net for his first goal as a Friar.

PC threatened in the 33rd minute, Liam Wilsonís attempt off a Joao Serrano free kick stopped by a diving Morton (five saves), who then grabbed the rebound. In the 71st minute, Gressel went in alone off an Alex DaCosta feed to convert his 12th goal of the season, the result marking coach Craig Stewartís fifth NCAA win with the Friars.
