MEN'S COLLEGE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Providence Friars' Julian Gressel
The Providence Friars had to tone down expectations early this season. Top recruit Zachary Herivaux decided to sign with the New England Revolution. Then, preseason All-Big East selections Dominik Machado and Mac Steeves went out with season-ending injuries. Going into last month, the Friars had a 4-5-0 record and seemed headed toward mediocrity.
Then, PC went on an eight-match winning streak, qualifying for the NCAA Menís Championship. And after a 5-4 comeback victory over previously-unbeaten top-seeded Maryland Sunday, the Friars have gained an identity as a team to beat.
German senior Julian Gressel, the New England Soccer News Men's Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 13, has led the way for the Friars. Gressel set up the opening goal and scored the second goal in a 2-0 victory over Delaware in a first-round match, then converted twice against the Terrapins. Gressel has 26 career goals, tied for third with Jim Rabadan on the all-time PC scoring list. Gressel, who played in the German Regionalliga with TSV Neustadt/Aisch and Eintracht Bamberg, outdueled Marylandís Gordon Wild, who played for SV Wehenís reserve team and Mainz 05ís junior teams.
