MEN'S COLLEGE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
UConn Huskies' Abdou Mbacke Thiam
Abdou Mbacke Thiam did not wait long to make his mark this season, scoring 57 seconds into the UConn Huskiesí first game. Thiam, the New England Soccer News Men's Player of the Week for the week ending Aug. 28, converted the opening goal in a 3-1 win over Iona and a penalty kick in a 2-0 victory over Nebraska-Omaha.
Thiam continued his partnership with midfielder Kwame Awuah, who set up the goal against the Gaels and earned the penalty kick against the Mavericks.
Last season, Thiam, a 24-year-old sophomore, was twice named New England Soccer News Player of the Week last season after arriving from Diambars Academy, a Senegalese club administered by former France national team stars such as New York City FC coach Patrick Vieira. UConn coach Ray Reid recruited Thiam as a replacement for Cyle Larin, who has starred for Orlando City SC the last two seasons, and the move paid off as Thiam scored 11 goals last season.
