UConn Huskies bounce Big Red

STORRS, Conn. -- Second-half substitutes Andrew Geres and Nick Zuniga provided the goals as the No. 14 UConn Huskies men's team took a 2-0 win over Cornell before a 2,800 crowd at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium Monday night.

Connecticut (3-1-0) took the lead as Geres finished a 67th-minute left-footer after a Kwame Awuah free kick hit the bar, his third career goal. Zuniga scored his first goal of the season off a Sebastian Brems layoff in the 72nd minute.

UConn had a 13-4 shots advantage over the Big Red (0-1-1).

The Huskies' first chance came in the seventh minute as Jake Nerwinski laid off to Brems, who fired a left-footer high. In the 27th minute, Abdou Mbacke Thiam dodged a defender at the top of the penalty area before firing a 15-yarder high. Alex Sanchez found space in the 48th minute, launching a 25-yarder wide left. Less than a minute later, Awauh juked defenders before putting a right-footer that was saved. Zuniga replaced Thiam in the 61st minute and Geres entered for Niko Peridis a minute later. In the 64th minute, Sanchez laid off in to Zuniga, who chipped a curling shot just over.
