Thiam scores twice as UConn speeds past Greyhounds

STORRS, Conn. -- Sophomore forward Abdou Mbacke Thiam scored twice and redshirt junior midfielder Andrew Geres had a goal and two assists as the UConn menís team took a 5-1 win over Loyola (Md.) before a 3,666 crowd at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium Saturday night.

The Huskies (4-3-0) had their highest goal total since a 5-0 win over Temple in the 2014 American Athletic Conference quarterfinals.

UConn took the lead as junior Alex Sanchez scored at the near post, his second goal of the season, off a Geres assist in the 17th minute. The Greyhounds (1-5-0) tied the score on Matt Bautistaís 28th-minute goal. Thiam broke the deadlock with a far post finish off a Geres feed in the 30th minute. Geres upped the edge to 3-1 off a Sebastian Brems pass in the opening minute of the second half. Thiam then scored his fourth goal of the season off a Jake Nerwinski cross in the 49th minute. Nerwinski scored his first goal of the season in the 61st minute.
