MEN'S COLLEGE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
UConn Huskies' striker Abdou Mbacke Thiam
The UConn Huskies have had a simple formula for success in the last two seasons – find Senegalese striker Abdou Mbacke Thiam in position to score. Thiam has played 29 matches for UConn, converting 17 goals, the Huskies going 11-0-2 when he converts.
Thiam has been named New England Soccer News Men's Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 26 after scoring in both of the Huskies’ victories, 2-1 at Rhode Island Tuesday and 1-0 over Temple in their American Athletic Conference opener Saturday. Thiam has totaled four goals in the last three games, sparking a three-game Husky winning streak.
Coach Ray Reid recruited Thiam last season to replace Cyle Larin, who had gone on to become MLS rookie of the year with Orlando City SC. And Thiam, who starred at the highly-regarded Diambars Academy in Senegal, quickly made an impact, finding a rapport with Kwame Awuah, who had teamed with Larin growing up in Toronto and with the Huskies.
