MEN'S COLLEGE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
UConn Huskies' forward Abdou Mbacke Thiam
The UConn Huskies figured out last week it is not necessary for Abdou Mbacke Thiam to score for them to be victorious. But they Huskies need Thiam to continue his shot-making, successful or not.
Thiam scored his seventh goal of the season in UConnís 1-0 win over Providence Wednesday, upping the Huskies' record to 12-0-2 when he scores over a two-season span. On Saturday, Thiam was a little off on a 31st-minute shot in a 1-0 victory at Tulsa, but his attempt off the post was finished by Andrew Geres as the Huskies improved their winning streak to five games. That snapped a four-match scoring streak for Thiam, who has totaled 18 goals in 31 career matches for UConn.
Thiam, 24, New England Soccer News Men's Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 3, is among the latest products of the Diambars Academy in Senegal, founded in 2000 by a group including New York City FC coach Patrick Vieira. Several Diambars players have gone on to professional careers, notably Papa Alioune Ndaiye Badou with Osmanlispor in Turkey. Others went for collegiate careers in the U.S., Thiam following Cheick Coly and Mouhamadou Moustapha Samb to UConn (Samb transferred to Northeastern this year), Babacar Gadiaga going to Dartmouth and Serge Gomis to Lindsey Wilson.
