UConn women clinch AAC title

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Stephanie Ribeiro scored twice as the No. 19-ranked UConn women’s team clinched its second successive regular season American Athletic Conference title with a 2-1 victory over East Carolina at Johnson Stadium Sunday.

Ribeiro upped her goal total to 19 (NCAA-leading 11 game-winners), scoring in her fifth successive game, as UConn (16-2-1 overall, 8-0-1 AAC) improved its streaks to six straight wins and 12 games unbeaten. The Huskies will play host to the conference tournament, earning a bye until the semifinals Friday.

The Pirates (5-12-1, 1-7-1) took the lead as Annah Lindberg finished a left-footer off a Lana Spitler feed off a corner kick in the 11th minute.

Ribeiro converted past a diving Caroline Jeffers from the edge of the penalty area off a Kim Urbanek pass in the 26th minute. Ribeiro scored the deciding goal on a rebound of her deflected close-range shot, chipping with the outside of her right foot just across the goalline in the 87th minute.
