UConn men draw with SMU, finish in third

STORRS, Conn. -- The UConn menís team clinched a berth in the American Athletic Conference Championship with a 1-1 draw with SMU at Morrone Stadium Saturday night.

The Huskies (11-6-1 overall, 3-3-1 conference) finished in third place and will meet the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the semifinals at Corbett Soccer Stadium in Tampa, Fla., at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

UConn, which outshot SMU (6-9-1, 2-4-1), 17-9, threatened early on a Munir Saleh header off a Dylan Greenberg pass and a Jake Nerwinski shot that was block. The Huskies took the lead as Simen Olafsen headed in an Andrew Geres feed in the 23rd minute, his second goal of the season. Abdou Mbacke Thiam nearly extended the lead as he hit the post in the 56th minute. SMU equalized on Garrett McLaughlinís 57th-minute goal, his fourth of the season. In the 109th minute, UConnís Kwame Awuah went in alone, his shot knocked away.

Before the match, the Huskies honored six seniors, goalkeeper Chris Musco, defenders Nerwinski and Jesse Wasserman and midfielders Awuah, Brems and Nick Zuniga.
