UConn women demolish Great Danes
STORRS, Conn. -- Stephanie Ribeiro scored her 21st goal of the season and Rachel Hill added her 61st career goal as No. 13-ranked UConn took a 4-2 win over Albany in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Championship at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium Saturday night.
The Huskies (19-2-1), who will face Auburn in Gainesville, Fla., Friday, improved their unbeaten streak to 14 games (nine consecutive wins) with their 11 successive home victory. UConn improved to 17-6-1 in NCAA first round matches and 12-4 in NCAA tournament home games.
Freshman Alexa Casimiro gave UConn the lead with her second goal of the season in the fifth minute. Ribeiro upped the advantage in the ninth minute.
Mariah Williams scored the first of her two goals for Albany (11-8-1) in the 43rd minute.
Hill converted in the 51st minute as Ribeiro headed on a long throw-in from sophomore Liane Keegans. Hill, who scored her 16th goal of the season and improved her consecutive game scoring streak to three, trails Moira Buckley (1980-83) by two goals on the all-time UConn list.
Senior Maddie Damm, who led the team with six shots, capitalized in the 80th minute from the top right corner of the penalty area for her second goal of the season.
In the 89th minute, Williams scored her second goal.
