COLLEGE BOOT SPOTLIGHT: STEPHANIE RIBEIRO
Meet the Candidates, and Vote!
UConn Huskies senior forward Stephanie Ribeiro is one of three nominees for the New England Soccer News women’s college player of the year and the Soccer News Net Women’s College Boot, recognizing the national player of the year.
Ribeiro led NCAA Division 1 with 21 goals (tied with Dayton’s Alexis Kiehl) and 11 game-winning goals, and had 14 assists (second to Georgetown’s Rachel Corboz’ 16) in 23 games.
Ribeiro was named an NSCAA first team All-America and American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year as UConn (19-3-1) won the league regular-season and tournament titles, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Championship, the Huskies’ 31st appearance in the tournament.
Senior Rachel Hill (16 goals) and Ribeiro combined as the nation’s most productive scoring duo, totaling 37 goals (two more than BYU’s Ashley Hatch and Michele Vasconcelos). Ribeiro and Hill have been named MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalists and Ribeiro, Hill and teammate Emily Armstrong were named first team NSCAA All-Northeast Region.
In 84 career games, Ribeiro totaled 37 goals. Ribeiro’s 21 goals this season ranked tied for second (with Sara Whalen and Ginny Woodward) behind the Husky record 24, held by Jen Carlson and Mary-Frances Monroe.
Ribeiro was named the New England Soccer News Player of the Week for the weeks ending Sept. 26, Oct. 3, 17 and 31, and Nov. 20.
Fan voting accounts for 40% of the total toward selection of the Soccer News Net College Boot, and the winner of the popular voting receives the Soccer News Net Supporters’ Choice award.
