UMass Minutemen edge Hartford in extra time

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- A Ty Goncalves 97th-minute penalty kick gave the UMass men's team a 3-2 extra time win over Hartford in a non-conference match at Al-Marzook Field Saturday night.

Goncalves scored his fifth career goal and first game-winner for the Minutemen (2-6-1).

Kevin Boino earned the penalty kick, Goncalves finishing to the right side of the net as Jimmy Slayton dove the opposite way.

Hartford (3-4-1) scored first as Quenton Swift one-timed a shot from 23 yards inside the left post past a diving Jorge Becerra in the 47th minute.

Defender Konrad Gorich tied the score, finishing off a throw-in for his first collegiate goal in the 60th minute. Defender Josh Jess broke the deadlock with a 70th-minute goal, his first in 62 career appearances.

Hartford equalized as Andre Morrison evaded several challenges and finished from long range in the 88th minute.
