UMass Minutemen rallies too late against URI

KINGSTON, R.I. -- The UMass menís team rallied late in falling, 2-1, to Rhode Island in an Atlantic 10 Conference match at the URI Soccer Complex Wednesday night.

The Minutemen (4-7-3 overall, 1-1-2 A-10), who had a five-match unbeaten streak snapped, were outshot by the Rams (5-9-1, 2-3-0), 15-6.

The Rams capitalized on a failed clearance as Stavros Zarokostas finished near post off a Ryan Bailey feed in the sixth minute. In the 55th minute, a Baily-Carlo Davids combination set up Danny Apajee, who finished past a diving Jorge Becerra and a 2-0 URI advantage.

UMass cut the deficit as Josh Jess finished off a Brandon Merklin throw-in in the 73rd minute. Ty Goncalves shot wide in the 87th minute and Merklinís last-second header was cleared.
