UMass Minutemen knocked out by VCU

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The UMass menís team surrendered a last-minute regulation goal, then fell, 2-1, in extra time to Virginia Commonwealth in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament Thursday.

UMass (7-9-3) took the lead on a 20th-minute Alex DeSantis goal off a Ty Goncalves cross. The Minutemen threatened as Mark Dunphy hit the bar seconds before the goal. Late in half, VCUís Jason McGlothern hit the bar.

VCU (7-9-3), which outshot the Minutemen, 19-3, equalized on a 90th-minute Brandon Eaton goal off a Jorge Herranz corner kick. Rafael Santos decided the match with a chip into the upper right corner of the net in the 99th minute.
