Vermont women squander lead against Marist
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Vermont women's team got off to a fast start, scoring two minutes into its season-opener, but fell to Marist, 4-2, Saturday night.
Caitie Green finished low into an open net after Sarah Martin found Nikki McFarland streaking down the right flank.
Marist equalized when Camille Bowen sent a 30-yard free kick over Coco Speckmaier. The Red Foxes took the lead on a 43rd-minute goal from Juliette Loccisano, who headed over Speckmaier.
Bowen converted a 57th-minute penalty kick following a handball call.
The Cats pulled within 3-2 after a Brooke Jenkins shot hit the crossbar, then Martinís 25-yard free kick deflected in off the defensive wall for her 10th career goal.
A minute later, Bowen completed a hat trick.
Speckmaier and Makayla Foley had five saves.
Vermont has a 4-1-1 all-time record against Marist and is 2-4 in season-openers under coach Kristi Lefebvre.
