Vermont Catamounts open with OT win over Titans
BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Brian Wright's left-footed finish in the 109th minute lifted the Vermont menís team past California State-Fullerton, 3-2, in the Catamountsí season-opener at Virtue Field Friday. Bernard Yeboah scored two goals for the Catamounts.
The Titans attacked early, threatening on corner kicks, Arthur Bacquet clearing off the line in the 35th minute.
A minute later, Yeboah scored from distance, powering a right-foot volley inside the left post past David Rodriguez Elias.
In the 42nd minute, Christopher Watts bounced a right-footer off the crossbar. Four minutes into the second half, Wright hit the bar off a pass from Shane Haley.
The Titans equalized in the 51st minute, Ronaldo Pineda lofting a 40-yarder into the upper left corner past Eric Venezia.
Yeboah was denied an open chance at the left post in the 59th minute after a low centering pass from Wright. Three minutes later, Yeboah slotted a shot through traffic off the right post off another Wright setup.
Alex Heilmann tied the game, 2-2, finishing a first-timer from inside the penalty area off a left wing cross from Robert Coronado in the 79th minute.
Both teams were solid defensively in overtime, before Wright, the reigning America East Tournament Most Outstanding Player took a touch in the penalty area and buried a left-footer shot under Rodriguez Elias.
Venezia made four saves in his second career start.
