Duo leads way as Vermont blanks Blue Devils

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- The Brian Wright-Bernard Yeboah combination led the Vermont Catamounts menís team to a 2-0 win over Central Connecticut State at the CCSU Soccer Field Monday night.

Vermont (2-0-0) freshman Aron Runarsson make two saves in his NCAA debut. Three minutes in, Runarsson made a save at the back post on Andres Muriel Albino after a low cross across the goal area.

On the ensuing possession, Wright streaked behind the back line, burst into the penalty area, then shot a low right-footer near post past Nick Velleca for his second goal of the season.

In the ninth minute, Yeboah, the reigning America East Player of the Week, narrowly missed left with a right-footer after a feed from Wright at the edge of the penalty area.

Runarsson made another save with 10 minutes left in the first half, moving left to rob CCSU's leading returning scorer, Ryan Taylor. The Blue Devils, playing their season-opener, then nearly tied the score as David Bergstrom hit the left post on a curling free kick under the wall from 30 yards.

In the 55th minute, a misplayed header allowed Wright to go in on goal alone. Wright delayed before feeding Yeboah on the left ahead of two Blue Devil pursuers, Yeboah collecting his third goal of the season.

A goal kick from Runarsson with eight minutes remaining sprung Wright on net, Carson D'Ambrosio saving.

UVM finished with a 15-8 edge in shots. Wright and Yeboah have combined for all five Vermont goals through two games.
