Catamount men stretch streak to five

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Vermont men's team continued its strong start to the season, taking a 3-1 win over Old Dominion to open the ODU Soccer Classic at the ODU Soccer Complex Friday night.

Bernard Yeboah (32nd minute), Loftur Eriksson (63rd) and Shane Haley (75th) scored for the 23rd-ranked Catamounts (5-0-0), who are off to their longest unbeaten streak to start the season since 1979 (3-0-3) and longest win streak since 1977 (6-0-0).

"What a game,” Vermont coach Jesse Cormier said. “The guys went blow for blow with a top team and came out on top. We were struggling to solve a few issues centrally in the first half, which turned into a back and forth transition game. In the second half, we became more compact and organized and couldn't be broken down. On the other side, our attack became more purposeful and we found two goals in the second half and two more opportunities to finish them off."

Yeboah netted his team-high seventh goal, a close-range shot off a feed from Charlie DeFeo following a Brian Wright throw-in.

Old Dominion (2-1-1) answered in the 42nd minute when Sebastian Hauret set up Doni Pollock for his first goal of the season.

Vermont's halftime adjustments led to a 15-2 shot advantage in a second half. Eriksson converted a penalty kick for his first goal of the year and Haley added a 30-yarder off a Wright pass to beat Alex Tiesenhausen (nine saves).

Aron Runarsson posted five saves and the Catamounts had a 23-14 edge in shots.
