Catamount streak ends with loss to VCU
RICHMOND, Va. -- The No. 23-ranked Vermont men’s team dropped a 2-1 decision to Virginia Commonwealth Sunday, but captured the ODU Soccer Classic title.
UVM (5-1-0), off to its best start since 2001, won the event on goal difference and had defender Loftur Eriksson named tournament MVP, plus Arthur Bacquet, Stefan Lamanna and Brian Wright selected to the All-Tournament team.
"VCU was deserving today,” Vermont coach Jesse Cormier said. “They played with real urgency and desire and unfortunately we couldn't match them. Our intensity and willingness to meet the standard today just wasn't there and we underperformed in each area of the field. We need to pay attention to our missing elements and our failure to improve our performance as we move forward. VCU gave us plenty to think about and ways to improve."
Eli Lockaby's one-timer deflected off a defender in for his first goal of the season to give VCU the lead seconds before the end of the first half.
Fortia Munts set up Jorge Herranz for a 64th-minute shot past Eric Venezia and a 2-0 VCU lead.
Lamanna scored his first goal of the season in the 78th minute.
