No. 20 Catamounts close out Minutemen

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The 20th-ranked Vermont menís team held off a UMass rally for a 3-2 win before a crowd of about 900 at Virtue Field Wednesday night.

The Catamounts (8-1-0) improved their winning streak to three games and improved to 4-0-0 at home in the opener of a four-game home stand.

All five goals were scored in the first half. Vermont took a 3-0 lead on goals by Charlie DeFeo, Brian Wright and Stefan Lamanna in the opening 24 minutes. DeFeo finished a rebound after a Lamanna cross was deflected by Yeboah and stopped by Jorge Becerra in the fifth minute. Yeboah found Wright streaking into the penalty area, Wright sending in a half volley for his sixth goal of the season in the 11th minute. Lamanna rolled in a right-footer inside the left post off a cross field pass from Yeboah.

UMass cut the deficit as substitute Andrew Barrowman first-timed a shot from near the penalty spot off a Henry Steinkamp feed in the 26th minute. In the 42nd minute, Mark Dunphy headed in an Alex DeSantis corner kick.

Vermont closed out the game in the second half, holding the Minutemen to one shot and threatening on a short-range one-timer by Jon Arnar Barodal.
