Catamount women bested by Black Bears

ORONO, Maine -- The Vermont women’s team attack stalled again as the Catamounts sustained a 1-0 loss to Maine in both teams’ America East Conference opener at Mahaney Diamond Sunday.

Genaya Loftis scored in the eighth minute, going in alone off a long ball and avoiding a charging Coco Spackmaier to finish into an open net for her first goal of the season.

The Catamounts (5-4-1 overall, 0-1-0 conference), who lost their second successive 1-0 decision after scoring in each of their opening eight matches, controlled possession for most of the opening half, a 40th-minute finishing into an open net by Savana Yurick disallowed for handling. Vermont also had an early second-half Caitie Green header off a Sarah Martin corner kick saved by a diving Samantha Cobotic, then cleared. In the 84th minute, Julia Smith’s point-blank attempt off a Nikki McFarland feed was grabbed. The Catamounts attempted 10 shots on goal to five for the Black Bears (5-3-0, 1-0-0), who were playing for the first time since Sept. 11.
