Vermont Catamount men stop Stony Brook

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Brian Wright’s 106th-minute goal gave the 16th-ranked Vermont men’s team a 2-1 extra time win over Stony Brook in both teams’ America East Conference opener Saturday.

Loftur Eriksson’s 90th-minute penalty kick sent the match into extra time as the Catamounts (9-2-1 overall, 1-0-0 conference) snapped a two-game winless streak.

"We have been winning a lot of games when we have leads and maybe out-talenting teams,” Vermont coach Jesse Cormier said. “We showed a lot of unity by sticking with it today. In the conference, it's only a moment or two that make the difference in the game and our guys stuck with it, found the moment, and made it happen.”

Stony Brook took the lead on Vince Erdei’s one-timer off a Danny Espinoza cross in the 73rd minute. The Catamounts, who had a 24-8 shots advantage, tied the score after Shane Haley earned a penalty kick, then Wright ended the match, finishing a Charlie DeFeo cross.
