Vermont Catamount men crushed by Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Vermont Catamounts menís team was blanked for the first time this season, taking a 4-0 loss to the Albany Great Danes in an America East Conference match Friday night.

Vermont (9-3-1 overall, 1-1-0 conference) had been averaging 2.25 goals per match.

"Albany (6-3-2, 1-0-1) was better than us tonight and beat us soundly in all areas,Ē Vermont coach Jesse Cormier said. ďThe most glaring and disappointing area we lost was in our ability to compete with them. Albany had much more determination and physicality and put us under pressure consistently and we didn't respond."

In the 14th minute, Albany forward Afonso Pinheiro took possession after a failed clearance, took two touches and lined in a low shot, the first of his two goals.

Two minutes later, Vermont had a chance to tie, Stefan Lamanna crossing to Brian Wright, who shot directly at Danny Vitiello (two saves).

The Great Danes upped the lead to three goals early in the second half on goals by Nico Solabarrieta (47th minute) and Carlos Clark (49th). Pinheiro converted in the 72nd minute, his seventh goal of the season.
