Vermont women rally against UMBC


BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The Vermont Catamounts women’s team ran its winless streak to three games with a 1-1 draw with the UMBC Retrievers in an America East Conference match at Virtue Field Thursday night.

The Catamounts (6-5-3 overall, 1-2-2 conference) outshot the Retrievers (5-8-1 and 1-3-1), 28-9, Savana Yurick leading an early barrage on Leah Roth (11 saves).

The Retrievers struck in the 62nd minute as Gabby Boehmer headed in Nikki Saad cross from the edge of the penalty area for her fourth goal of the season.

Vermont equalized on a 79th-minute Sarah Martin goal, her third of the year. Yurick advanced to the goalline, turned right, and crossed, Martin one-timing the from the goal area.

Vermont freshman Julia Smith had a late chance, lofting a shot wide of the far post.

In the final minute of the second overtime, Nikki McFarland went in alone off a Caitie Green through ball, but her shot went directly at Roth.
