Vermont men earn first-round home game
BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The Vermont Catamounts menís team clinched a home playoff game in the America East Tournament with a 2-0 victory over New Hampshire at Virtue Field Wednesday night.
UVM (12-5-1, 4-3-0), third-seeded, will play host to No. 6 Binghamton at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Catamounts threatened in the first half on a third-minute Charlie DeFeo header off a Stefan Lamanna corner, then a fifth-minute Lamanna corner was stopped by Andrew Pesci (nine saves). In the 18th minute, Brian Wright bent a shot just wide of the far post.
The Wildcats (12-6-0, 4-3-0) threatened a 22nd-minute breakaway, Eric Venezia (three saves) making a diving stop.
The Catamounts scored off long throw-in from Wright, Loftur Eriksson heading on, DeFeo chipped in his third goal of the season over a diving Pesci in the 63rd minute. In the 85th minute, Wright took a through ball from Shane Haley, then fired into the right side of the net for his 10th goal of the season, the third Catamount to record consecutive seasons with at least 10 goals.
Two minutes later, Aron Runarsson (three saves) stopped a Ben Gleditsch shot off a corner.
