Vermont routs Rider in NCAA first round

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Brian Wright converted a hat trick and set up another goal as Vermont took a 4-1 win over Rider in the first round of the NCAA Menís Championship before a Virtue Field record 2,058 crowd Thursday night.

Wright upped his season total to 14 with goals in the 24th, 43rd and 89th minutes as the Catamounts (14-6-1) advanced to a second-round visit to Virginia at 1 p.m. Sunday. Vermont, which outshot Rider (13-4-3), 22-18, advanced to the second round for the first time since 2007.

Wright scored his first goal off a Jon Arnar Barodal feed, moving around two defenders to send a left-footer into the far side of the net. Wright then finished into an open after touching on a Charlie DeFeo through ball. Wright, who has scored eight goals in the last five games, again went in alone, this time dishing to Stefan Lamanna to score into an open net for the third Vermont goal in the 72nd minute.
The Broncs cut the deficit on Arthur Herpreckís 88th-minute goal, then Wright went in alone again, finishing past Ryan Baird (12 saves) with 14 seconds on the clock.
