Vermont Catamounts clipped by Cavaliers
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Vermont squandered a second-half advantage, falling, 2-1, in extra time to Virginia in the second round of the NCAA Menís Championship at Klockner Stadium Sunday.
The Catamounts (14-7-1) took the lead on Jon Arnar Barodalís 62nd-minute goal. But Vermont played most of the second half at a numerical disadvantage after Charlie DeFeo received his second caution in the 65th minute.
The Cavaliers (11-3-5) equalized on Patrick Fossí 73rd-minute free kick and decided the contest on Pablo Aguilar's 103rd-minute goal.
Vermont threatened in the opening half as Brian Wright took on three defenders before having his shot stopped by a diving Jeff Caldwell (three saves). Bernard Yeboahís left-foot volley went high from just to the left of the penalty spot off a Stefan Lamanna cross in the 26th minute.
DeFeo set up the goal, leading a counter by threading a pass with the outside of his foot down the left wing Wright cutting into the penalty area and laying off for Barodal to finish with a low shot into the left corner of the net.
Yeboah had an extra time drive saved by a diving Caldwell, then Aguilar evaded four defenders before finishing inside the far right post from close range
