SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Uruguay might have only been playing for pride against Jamaica, and the Charruas showed they have plenty of that in taking a 3-0 victory in a Copa America Centenario match at Leviís Stadium Monday night.
Both Jamaica and Uruguay, the all-time leader with 15 Copa America titles, had been eliminated from contention after losing their two opening matches. But the Uruguayans (1-2-0, 3 points) displayed a composed attacking game as they dominated the action, capitalizing on the playmaking of Nicolas Lodeiro. Uruguay, playing without Barcelonaís Luis Suarez, went with Edinson Cavani at striker, Cavani failing to add to his career total of 30 international goals as the Celeste took the lead on Abel Hernandezí 21st-minute goal, then added an own goal and a Mathias Corujo conversion in the second half.
Hernandez took a through ball from Lodeiro and finished past Andre Blake.
Cavani headed on top of the net in the eighth minute and hit the side netting after intercepting a Blake clearance in the 18th minute. Blake saved shots by Hernandez in the seventh and 36th minutes and Diego Godin headed high in the 37th minute.
Jamaica found an offensive flow, but Uruguay had the best chances on counterattacks early in the second half. Cavani hit the right post with a header in the 64th minute. Matias Vecino replaced Carlos Sanchez in the 66th minute and, a minute later, Hernandez touched on a Lodeiro cross, which then deflected off Je-Vaughn Watson for an own goal and a 2-0 advantage.
In the 75th minute, Cavani outraced Jermaine Taylor into the penalty area, then went down as the ball rolled past Blake, who recovered as Colombian referee Wilson Lamouroux waived play on, Cavani claiming a penalty kick.
Blake made a diving save on a Vecino drive in the 85th minute, Cavani getting a slow shot off on the rebound. Two minutes later, Cavani maneuvered into the penalty area and shot high. In the 88th minute, Corujo went in alone on Blake for a three-goal edge. In stoppage time, Cavani had a shot blocked for a corner, then headed just high off a free kick.
