NYC routs Rapids
NEW YORK CITY FC 5, COLORADO RAPIDS 1
BRONX, NY--Frank Lampard netted the first hat trick in New York City FC history as the Eastern Conference leaders hammered the shorthanded Colorado Rapids 5-1 Saturday at Yankee Stadium.
NYC (10-7-6, 36 pts) now have a five-point edge over their Hudson River rivals the Red Bulls at the top of the conference table. The Rapids, who played with ten men after defender Michael Azira picked up his second yellow card of the match in the 37th minute, fall to 10-3-8 (38).
Lampard opened the scoring in the 28th minute, after Tommy McNamara crossed the ball in from the left flank, and completed his hat trick in a late four-minute burst ending with an 84th-minute penalty kick. In the 80th minute, Lampard scored off a feed from Jack Harrison, and he stepped to the spot after Harrison was taken down in the box by Dominique Badji.
Tony Taylor netted the game-winner for NYC in the 42nd minute, with a strong second effort after his initial shot was blocked. Steven Mendoza made the score 3-0 in the 75th, burying an 18-yard left footer after picking off an attempted backpass.
Shkelzen Gashi spoiled netminder Josh Saunders' shutout bid with a bouncing 25-yard free kick into the lower left corner in the second minute of stoppage time.
