Horst goal lifts Dynamo over San Jose
HOUSTON DYNAMO 2, SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES 1
SAN JOSE, Calif.--The Houston Dynamo edged the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 Friday night at Avaya Stadium.
The Dynamo (5-10-9, 24 pts) surged ahead on Ricardo Clark's goal in the sixth minute and never looked back, despite being outshot 15-4. David Horst netted the game-winner in the 50th, four minutes before Victor Bernardez put the Quakes (7-6-11, 31) on the board, and goalkeeper Joe Willis made four saves to close things out.
Clark connected from the top of the six-yard box after the San Jose defense failed to clear a corner kick. Horst got his head on Cristian Maidana's 25-yard free kick to ice the win.
Bernardez kept San Jose's hopes alive with his first goal of the season, also off a failed clearance. Willis clumsily punched a ball to the right edge of the penalty area, where Alberto Quintero darted in and centered a table-setting pass for Bernardez just outside the six-yard box.
