Villa lifts NYC to top spot in the East
NEW YORK CITY FC 2, HOUSTON DYNAMO 0
HOUSTON--David Villa scored two second-half goals as New York City FC blanked the Houston Dynamo 2-0 Friday at BBVA Compass Stadium.
The win gave NYC (14-9-9, 51 pts) first place in the MLS East and moved them within two points of FC Dallas in the race for the Supporters' Shield. Houston trail the field in the West at 7-12-11 (32).
Villa put NYC on the board in the 52nd minute, after Andrea Pirlo relayed Jack Harrison's free kick into the box for the Spanish striker, who connected from close range.
The stoppage-time capper lifted Villa over the Red Bulls' Bradley Wright-Phillips for the MLS goal scoring lead with 21.
NYC goalkeeper Josh Saunders finished with two saves, and dodged a bullet in the 73rd minute, when Houston's Raul Rodriguez drilled a close-range attempt off the right post.
