Rapids edge Dynamo

HOUSTON--The Colorado Rapids closed to within two points of first place in the MLS West with Saturday's 3-2 win over the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Colorado improve to 14-5-12 and 54 points, and have a game in hand on conference and league leaders FC Dallas. Houston remain at the bottom of the conference standings with 32 points (7-13-11).

Dominique Badji paced the winners with two goals, but Mauro Manotas matched his brace for the Dynamo, leaving Shkelzen Gashi's 79th-minute tally as the game-winner.

Badji opened the scoring in the 12th minute, slotting a sharply-angled shot after Houston's Raul Rodriguez gave the ball away outside the penalty area. Dillon Powers collected the first of his two assists on the play.

Manotas lifted the Dynamo into a 1-1 tie seconds before the intermission, one-touching Sheanon Williams' pass between two defenders and past netminder Tim Howard from seven yards.

Badji restored Colorado's lead in the 54th minute on a solo breakaway into the box, and Gashi made the score 3-1 with a 20-yard left-footer that slipped into the lower right corner. Manotas completed his brace with a rolling, deflected free kick two minutes later, but Houston's comeback stopped there.
