Eddies topple Cosmos
FC EDMONTON 2, NEW YORK COSMOS 1
EDMONTON, Alberta -- Papé Diakite scored in the 75th minute to lift FC Edmonton to a 2-1 win over the New York Cosmos at Clarke Stadium Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Cosmos fall to 4-3-1, 12 points, trainling Minnesota United by one point. Edmonton improves to 3-2-2, 11 pts.
After a Cosmos foul on the outside the right side of the penalty area, defender Adam Eckersley floated in a cross to the far post and Diakite outjumped several defenders from the edge of the six-yard box and headed the ball past goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer for the Senegalese's second game-winner of the season.
The Eddies drew first blood in the 13th minute when Dustin Corea sent a long, high ball to forward Jason Plumhoff into the penalty area. Plumhoff put a move on center back Carlos Mendes by going to his left before bringing the ball back to his right and scoring into the far left post .
In the 22nd minute Yohandry Orozco, who fired home a left-footed shot from 15 yards past keeper Matt VanOekel for a 1-1 deadlock.
