Cosmos clinch a spot

HEMPSTEAD NY---The New York Cosmos booked a spot in the North American Soccer League playoffs for the fourth consecutive year, recording a 2-0 win over the Fort Lauderdale Strikers Sunday afternoon at Shuart Stadium.

The Cosmos improved to 17-7-4 and 55 points in the overall table and to 11-3-4 and 34 points in the fall standings. The Strikers, who still sit just four points outside the fourth and final NASL playoff spot fall to 4-8-5, 17 pts (Fall) and 8-11-8, 32 pts overall.

Ruben Bover and Andres Flores scored for the defending Soccer Bowl champions, who s haven't lost at home in more than a year, extended their regular-season unbeaten streak to 18 games.

The Cosmos broke through in the 57th minute when Juan Arango beat his marker to the left-wing end line and cut the ball back to Bover some eight yards out. The midfielder half-volleyed the ball into the net past goalkeeper Bruno Cardoso for his fourth goal of the season.

Flores gave the hosts some breathing room with his fourth goal of the year in the 86th minute. Lucky Mkosana, who had come on for Jair Arrieta in the 78th minute, ran down an Arango ball on the left flank. The forward centered the ball for Flores, who struck from close range for a two-goal advantage.

EDMONTON Substitute forward Ben Fisk scored a late goal, giving Edmonton FC a 2-1 win and ending Indy Eleven's two-game winning at Clarke Field Sunday.

With the win, Edmonton (8-3-6, 30 pts) moved into second place in the Fall and overall standings, while Indy falls to 8-6-3, 27 pts Fall/12-6-9, 45pts).

Eamon Zayed gave Indy the lead in the 56th minute slotting the ball through the legs it through the legs of Matt VanOekel and in. In the 80th minute, the tide turned in favor of the Eddies as Pape Diakite found an equalizer, smashing home a bouncing ball in the box to make it one-all.

In the last minute of stoppage time FC Edmonton hit on the break as again Fordyce and Nicklaw combined, this time to find Fisk at the back post on a counter attack, and the substitute slotted past Jon Busch to give the Eddies the victory.

OTTAWA, ON - Sidney Rivera scored a late goal to give 10-man Puerto Rico FC a 2-1 win over the Ottawa Fury at TD Place Sunday.

Ryan Williams games Ottawa in the 15th minute, taking a cross from Guiseppe Gentile to give the Canadian side a 1-0 lead.
Puerto Rico equalized twelve minutes later as Hector Ramos found Kyle Culbertson .

In the 71st minute, Puerto Rico FC's Rudy Dawson slid in hard from behind on Williams, which resulted in a straight red card and sent Puerto Rico to ten men.

Not long after going down a man, , Puerto Rico stunned the crowd at TD Place as Rivera struck a beautiful shot that rang off the post and in giving no chance to Romuald Peiser.

YUKON, Okla. Both teams scored in stoppage time, as the Carolina RailHawks and Rayo OKC played to a 1-1 draw at Miller Stadium Sunday.

Carolina is no 9-11-7 34 pts while OKC is 7-9-11, 32 pts.

Carolina appeared to have sealed the win in the second minute of stoppage time, when Matt Watson ripped a shot from outside the box into the net.

Two minutes later, Futty Danso deflected the ball into the net after a scramble inside the Carolina box to tie the game 1-1.
