NPSL BEST XI
Two Boston City FC players on first team

Boston City FC midfielder Michael Bustamante and defender Gabriel De Souza have been named to the NPSL Best XI team, the league announced Tuesday.

BCFC goalkeeper Vitor Scariot was selected to the second team in a media poll covering 85 NPSL team across four regions and 13 conferences.

“Gabriel, Michael and Vitor were consistently three of our best players this season and they deserve to be honored by the league,” Boston City coach Palhinha said . “We are delighted not only for them, but also for everyone in our squad, who played a part in these awards. Our success this season was because of a great team spirit.”

Bustamante, a former New York Red Bulls midfielder, tied with Homero Morais with six goals as Boston City’s top scorers during the regular season, the only BCFC player to start all 17 matches and leading the team in minutes played (1406).

“Michael helped us a lot with all of his goals and assists,” Palhinha said. “He is a very strong and skillful player and was very important to us. He is another guy who has a lot of experience, even in MLS and that helped a lot of the younger players to understand what life requires of them inside soccer.”

“I feel happy to have accomplished this, but the award really comes down to the effort the team gave,” Bustamante said “It is a team sport and I have to have the other guys around me putting in shifts day in and day out for me to be successful.”

De Souza played in every minute of the first 13 matches of the season before missing three matches due to a hamstring injury. He scored the winning goal in the team’s first-ever win, a 1-0 victory over the Seacoast United Phantoms May 7. De Souza, who played with the junior teams of Atletico Mineiro and Corinthians, anchored a defense that provided the platform for a nine-match unbeaten run that took the Lions to the playoffs. De Souza picked up only one yellow card during the season.

“Gabriel has played for big teams in Brazil before and even being young, he is a very experienced player,” Palhinha sai. “His presence on our defense was crucial. He is a player that gives his best at every practice, every scrimmage and of course every game. Since the first game to our last game he was one of the keys of our success.”

“I am very happy with the announcement, it means a lot to me,” De Souza said. “This was the first time that I had played after a year away from soccer and the support and encouragement from our fans and this award drives me to want more and more next year and for my career. This is not an award for me only, but for all the players, staff and coaches. I am looking forward to my next year, filled with victories for Boston City FC.”

Scariot, 18, played the final 11 matches of the season and recorded seven shutouts.

“Vitor is one of our younger players, but all of his strength, skills and the command of the penalty area made our defense grow,” Palhinha said. He gave more confidence to our team to help achieve our goals and he helped us to win a lot of points throughout the season.”

“I thank everybody from this strong team for this award, for those who have believed in this since the beginning,” Scariot said “I’m thankful that I could help my teammates from Boston City FC, but this was only the first step. We still have a lot to win.”
