Flash overtakes Red Stars
WESTERN NEW YORK FLASH 2, CHICAGO RED STARS 0
ROCHESTER, NY --- Newcomer Lianne Sanderson and Lynn Williams each scored to lead the Western New York Flash to a 2-0 win over the Chicago Red Stars in a game that was weather-delayed an hour at Rhinos Stadium Friday night.
With the win, the Flash (7-4-0, 21 pts) move past Chicago (5-3-3, 18 pts) into sole possession of second place in the NWSL table.
For Sanderson, it was her first goal for the Flash since being acquired last week in a trade with Orlando. Williamsís goal was her league-leading sixth of the season, breaking a tie between her and teammate Jessica McDonald. McDonald finished the night with a pair of assists, setting up both goals.
The Flash opened the scoring in the 37th minute. The goal came after a Williams cross from the right side was headed off the post by McDonald. The ball deflected off the post to newcomer Sanderson, who finished off the play with her first goal for the Flash.
The Flash added to their lead in the 74th minute when McDonald sent a cross from the right side that was tapped by Williams past Chicago goalkepper Michelle Dalton for a 2-0 advantage.
