Thorns trounce Breakers

PORTLAND THORNS 5, BOSTON BREAKERS 1
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Thorns pulled within four points of first place with a 5-1 victory over the Boston Breakers before a 17,152 crowd at Providence Park Sunday night.

Nadia Nadim had a hat trick for the Thorns (9-3-5, 32 points), who trail the Washington Spirit in the standings.

The Thorns took the lead as Canadian national team star Christine Sinclair finished a Nadim corner kick in the 14th minute.

Nadim scored on a 42nd-minute penalty kick, then added goals in the 79th and 92nd minutes. Allie Long finished a Sinclair cross in the 48th minute.

The Breakers (3-13-1, 10 points) scored as Julie King converted off a Eunice Beckmann free kick in the 84th minute.

CHICAGO RED STARS 2, SEATTLE REIGN 2
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Chicago Red Stars rallied for a 2-2 tie with the Seattle Reign at Toyota Park Sunday night, moving into third place in the standings.

Manon Melis (fifth minute) and Lauren Barnes (ninth) scored for the Reign (6-5-6, 24 points). The Red Stars (8-4-5, 29 points) rallied on Sofia Huerta’s fifth goal of the season in the 27th minute, then Casey Short earned a penalty kick, Christen Press converting for her sixth goal of the season in the 80th minute.

FC KANSAS CITY 2, SKY BLUE FC 1
KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Defending champion FC Kansas City kept its playoff chances alive with a 2-1 win over Sky Blue FC Sunday night.

Samantha Kerr (45th minute) and Yael Averbuch (85th) scored for Kansas City (5-8-4, 19 points). Erin Simon (40th) scored for Sky Blue (6-7-4, 22 points).
