Breakers fall to Flash
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Lynn Williams scored twice in a one-minute span of the second half as the Western New York Flash downed the Boston Breakers, 4-0, at Rhino’s Stadium Friday night.
Western New York (4-3-0, 12 points) rookie Taylor Smith scored in the 14th minute, beating Jami Kranich through a crowd from close range.
The Breakers (1-6-0, 3 points), who were blanked for the sixth time this season, had chances to level in the first half. In the 20th minute, defender Mollie Pathman’s shot from 20 yards went just wide. Less than 10 minutes later, Julie King played a ball to Katie Schoepfer, whose shot was saved by Britt Eckerstrom. In the 41st minute, the Breakers had their best chance as King’s header was cleared off the line.
German striker Eunice Beckmann made her NWSL debut, replacing Kristie Mewis after halftime, as the Breakers started the second half strong. Midfielder Angela Salem fired just wide in the 54th minute, one of the Breakers’ closest attempts of the second half.
Williams scored in the 64th and 65th minutes and Abby Dahlkemper converted a 78th-minute penalty kick.
