Breakers blanked by Red Stars
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Boston Breakers began a four-game road trip with a 3-0 loss to the Chicago Red Stars at Toyota Park Saturday night.
Chicago (5-1-3, 18 points) scored in the third minute as Sofia Huerta redirected a ball from Vanessa DiBernardo past Libby Stout.
The Breakers (1-7-1, 4 points) threatened late in the first half, Australian striker Kyah Simonís shot deflecting off defender Julie Johnston before bouncing toward goal, former Breaker Alyssa Naeher saving in the 34th minute. In the 45th minute, Simon generated Bostonís best opportunity of the half, Naeher making a sprawling save.
Huerta scored in the 47th minute, firing from just inside the penalty area to the far corner.
In the 62nd minute, seconds after Stout made a diving save on a Christen Press free kick from 20 yards, defender Casey Short, slid in to redirect a pass from DiBernardo for the third goal.
Stout then saved a close-range shot from Press. The Breakers threatened late, Simon flicking a header just wide. In the final minute, Stout cut the angle and saved as Press came in alone.
